Council Activities
Each year in May/June the Council appoints a Mayor who plays an important role in the community. Apart from administrative duties such as chairing Council meetings, the Mayor attends civic and other functions and annually hosts a Buffet and Dance which is attended by representatives from all sections of the community
The Mayor during his/her year in office is always pleased to attend functions and events in the community. It’s a busy year for any councillor and the Mayor’s Diary is available for viewing on this website.
The Council is keen to support the community and manages and maintains the Welfare Hall in Loughor. The Hall is a very popular venue for a wide range of activities and the regular activities are listed on this website. When the Hall is not booked for a regular activity it is available for hire by members of the public and children’s parties are a popular booking.
From time to time the Council organises concerts in the Hall for the benefit of the community and around St Davids Day there is always a Cawl a Chan.
There are four primary schools in the area – Pontybrenin Primary, Ysgol Gynradd Pontybrenin, Tre Uchaf Primary and Casllwchwr Primary School. At the end of each school year the older pupils move on to secondary school which is a big step for them to take. In recognition of this maturity the Mayor visits each school and personally presents each pupil who will be moving to secondary education with a council pen to show how valued the children are in the community.
The Council also plays an active role in the Gorseinon and Llwchwr Lantern Parade which is held in December of each year and which brings pleasure and entertainment to many people in the run up to Christmas. The Welfare Hall in Loughor is one of the venues where the lanterns can be made.
In recent years the Council has produced a Newsletter which is circulated to all the houses in the community and which gives a roundup of the year’s activities. The Newsletter has been delivered by 360 (Llwchwr) Squadron Air Training Corps whose assistance is greatly valued by the Council.
In the summer the Council takes part in the City and County of Swansea Hanging Basket Scheme by sponsoring a number of flower baskets for the area. The use of hanging baskets and flower troughs brightens the community regardless of the weather. With Gowerton and Gorseinon councils also taking part there is a wonderful array of flowers wherever you go.
The Council does not overlook the elderly in the community and recognises their contribution to the area by presenting each person who reaches the age of 90 years with a Council plate. There are also a number people in the area who have reached the age of 100 years. If you know of anyone in the area who has or is about to reach either 90 or 100 years of age please let your local councillor know.
The Council awards grants to organisations working in the local community but cannot give grants to individuals. It is open to any local organisation to apply to the Council setting out the activities they are undertaking and specifying the need for grant assistance.
The Council is there to serve the community. It meets on a regular basis and the times and dates of Council and Committee meetings can be found on this website.
In working for the community the Council also likes to hear from the community to know that we are all going in the right direction.
